Rihanna's "S&M" video
(History) Rihanna's raunchy music video to one of her most popular songs "S&M" was released in January of 2011 when, although used to the seductive actions and outfits of alot of famous female singers already and (Artist) even Rihanna herself, being voted "Sexiest Woman Alive 2012" by FHM magazine and following her sexually heated video to "Te Amo" the year before, (Context) the public were shocked to see most of the things in this video released onto their TV screens.
It was immediately banned from 11 countries and had age restrictions online and time restrictions being played on the radio. Not only did the song include words that had to be cut out for the radio but a re-edit for the video was also considered, trying to make the the sexual gestures more subtle and the overpowering theme of sex to be dulled down.
(Art direction) The video is a combination of settings, rooms staged in a studio with a combination of difference outfits and props, all of which suggesting that she enjoys S&M, using "whips and chains" and wearing latex, leather and other seductive items of clothing. The editing fits to the music and ensures the gestures in the video match the words being sung at the time.
(Concept) I think that the reason for this video is just to make Rihanna look even more sexy and exciting, adding bright colours thoughout to make the video fun to watch but not quite distracting the audience away from the physical actions of the singer and those accompanying her in the shot.
(Representation) Women in this video are represented as being excitable and slutty as many are shown throughout the video and all are dressed the same as Rihanna, joining her in thrusting and suggestive dance movements. The only men shown in the video are being dominated by the women; one on a lead some tied to chairs or with their mouth seletaped closed, all suggesting women have control over men because of their sexiness and that women can do what they want with them.
