Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" video
(History) "Bohemian Rhapsody", in 1975, was the very first promotional video to be realsed and broadcasted on TV, (Context) on shows such as Top of the Pops instead of the music being played as before with a dancing group such as Pan's People. This method was introduced with this song to avoid having to show the band miming as it was a complex song.
(Artist) Queen was a top of the charts band who sold ground breaking amounts of copies of their albums, remaining one of the world's best selling music artists in history. (Concept) The band are shown as angelic/holy people, as if their music is heavenly and that they are worshipped by their fans. (Styling) They are even dressed in white silky clothing to add to this effect, as if angels. (Direction) Alot of the camera angles are from below to show them above the audience, as if we are looking up to them not only literally but also metaphorically. (Editing) There are alot of cuts in the video to match the music as it changes. In the first third, alot of fades are used to keep to the heavenly, elegant theme of the video, but in the second third there are alot of fast cuts to keep up with the choppy pace of that section. (Special effects) More than once, their faces are repeated across the screen, in one case to give the illusion of there being more than four of them; a choir of people, as if their voices are as powerful as this. Another duplicates their face to the side, elongating the movement alongside an elongated note/word in the song.
